Assamese Global Faces / Achievers

Global Assamese Faces....!!!

I was searching for some Assamese industralists and their success stories.....could somebody throw some examples of Assamese industrialists (for my search) or any Assamese (For a broader search criteria) who have made it big in national or international field......(He needs to be born in Assam, need not be an Assamese (even a Marwari industrialist who is from Assam can also be considered)......

I have searched and found the following worthy sons of assam who have made some name globally......

1) Hemendra Prasad Barooah
Hemendra Prasad Barooah born in 1926 obtained MBA from the Harvard Business School, USA - the first person form the North East to get this degree, Barooah joined the family tea plantation business in 1950.

Barooah had graduated from the Calcutta University securing position among the first ten top students and getting top Government Scholarships’ throughout. Soon after he joined, the family business expanded rapidly. In the Barooah Group, he is the Chairman of B & A Limited and B & A Multiwall Packaging Ltd. and Director of Assam Tea Brokers Pvt.Ltd. His tea company was the first company owned by an Assamese family to go public and be listed in the stock exchanges in Kolkata, Mumbai and Guwahati.

The Kamal Kumari Foundation, was instituted in 1980 in memory of his mother, Late Kamal Kumari Barooah of Jorhat. The foundation has achieved acclaim and renown for its charitable and constructive activities in the eastern region of the country.

The Foundation has restored Namghars and Satriya cultural centres in various parts of Assam, built and renovated public facilities, sponsored meritorious students in national institutions of repute, instituted scholarships for handicapped and needy students, offered medical aids to the needy and financially assisted publication of rare Assamese literary works.

Barooah was greatly instrumental in the starting of tea auctions at Guwahati. The Calcutta based broking fraternity at that time vehemently opposed the Assam Government’s move to start Auctions in Guwahati.
They held that no tea buyers would agree to operate from Guwahati. Barooah had a team up with John Brock of Brooke Bond and persuade Brooke Bone to operate in the Guwahati Auction. Once Brooke Bond’s assurance was received, the date of the first auction was finalized, and the very first lot was hammered down by Late Radha Govinda Barua, Chairman of Mr.Barooah’s new broking company, Assam Tea Brokers Pvt.Ltd.

In 1996, Barooah was elected president of the Bengal Chamber. At the request of Assam Government (Gunin Hazarika), Barooah had taken the initiative to start the Guwahati chapter of BCCI in 1997, which was converted to an independent chamber named North East Chamber of Commerce & Industry (NECCI) in 1999. NECCI was the first major business chamber in the North East, devoted to industrial development of the North East.

Barooah also took an initiative to start heritage tourism and tea-tourism in the North East. In 1996 he restored a family bungalow (Tudor-type) at Shillong and converted it into a Boutique Guest House. In 1998 he restored the family mansion at Thengal village, near Titabor - and in the same year a hundred year a hundred year old tea garden bungalow at Sangsua Tea Estate near Jorhat.

Visitors from Europe, UK, US, and the South East Asian countries, are using these heritage houses either for just holidays or on their visits to Majuli and Kaziranga.

Barooah’s managerial capability had been recognized by one and all. From the tea industry to banking and management. Barooah held a string of high positions - Member of Tea Board for 3 terms and vice chairman for one term, Director of Indian Airlines, Director of State Bank of India, Assam Industrial Development Corporation, and Chairman of Tea Research Association and Chairman of Indian Tea Association and Chairman of Consultative Committee of Plantation Associations.
The Ministry of Industrial Development had also recognized Barooah’s business acumen and knowledge by inducting him as a member of the central advisory council for industries, the apex body in the country for determining industrial policy.
